Essay on Gay Marriage and Religion

Most religions see homosexual relationships as a sin. However, In the second half of the XIX century, along with changes in the public consciousness, there is liberal revision of attitudes towards homosexuality among the Jews and Christians. Currently, some of the Christian churches and trends in Judaism (as well as a small part of the liberal movements in Islam) abandoned the traditional view on homosexuality. In classical Buddhism homosexuality is defined as sexual misconduct.

For almost the entire history of Christianity, homosexual relationships were considered a sin, and its cause (as generally a cause of any sin) was attributed to distortion of human nature and its propensity to sin after the Fall of man. This view on homosexual relationships was a part of the official position of the Catholic and most Protestant Churches. In Orthodoxy and especially Catholicism there are theologians who challenge the official ecclesiastical condemnation of homosexual relations.

Those, who write their essay on gay marriage and religion, should know that currently, among the Protestant denominations there are no former unity of views on issues of homosexual behavior and homosexual tendencies. Most Protestant churches, including the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the majority of the Baptist, Methodist, and Pentecostal churches adhere to the traditional Christian view on homosexual behavior as a manifestation of the sinfulness of human nature. Some Protestant religious organizations in Western Europe, North America, and Oceania pleaded homosexual behavior not sinful.

Religious organizations that do not recognize homosexual relationships sinful are: the Church of Sweden, the Church of Denmark, the Church of Iceland, the Protestant Church of the Netherlands, the Evangelical Church in Germany, the United Church of Canada, the Episcopal Church of the United States, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the United Church of Christ, the metropolitan Community Church, and liberal Quakers. There are also some Baptist churches, Pentecostal churches and other denominations.

Homosexuality in Islam, according to the ljma, is forbidden. Basis for this decision is the Koranic parable of the people of Lut (Sodom and Gomorrah), which angered Allah for what they used in the passion men instead of women (Qur’an 7:81). However, in Islam there is no holistic concept of homosexuality, which includes not only sodomy, but also platonic relationship. Homosexuality is generally regarded as some of its manifestations. First of all anal sex is definitely forbidden in Islam, no matter what the nature of it is a homo-or heterosexual.

Some followers of the liberal movements in Islam are in favor of a revision of traditional concepts and defend contemporary reading of the Koran, including attitudes toward homosexuality. They believe that homosexuality should not be considered as a sin and oppose the legal persecution of homosexuals. According to them, a true Muslims may be a gay or lesbian.
