Essay: My Best Educational Experience

The pace modern lifestyle dictates us, makes us continuously receive and process a large amount of information. Throughout almost all its life a modern man is in the course of learning something, or teaching somebody – sometimes he is a teacher, but most often he is a student. That is because the education today became an essential ingredient of daily life, which, in turn, led to the development of such a phenomenon as the educational experience.

The notion of the educational experience usually means the experience concerning the process of giving or receiving knowledge and skills as well as a social interaction during the process.

Each of us has such an experience of their own. It includes an emotional sphere — our attitude toward the educational process, towards our teachers; a personal set of the stereotypes: the math is easy or foreign languages are hard to learn; as well as the techniques acquired during the education — the way we assimilate the knowledge, etc.

An educational experience is built mainly according to the psychological characteristics of a personality: temper, will, personal values. With all our likeness, we are different in certain features important for the training process. That is why there is no such thing as universal training methods. That said, every personal experience enriches the palette of the teaching tools.

Without intention to wholly cover such a vast subject, I would like to share some of my observations on the matter.

As for most of us, for me, there were times when I was a teacher or a student, so I had to teach or learn something. Which of my educational experience would I eager to call the best one? The first significant one, as it seems to me, is the student-student interaction.

We receive information in many different ways: visually, aurally, or kinesthetically. As a rule, one of the means is the preferred one. Thus, if the way of transferring information between a student and his teacher is the same, the educational process is beautiful and comfortable, as the opposite to the situation when a student’s excellent way of learning is by ear and her teacher is fond of making his lessons into a great visual performance.

Our temper also significantly affects the process of the education. Corresponding student-teacher tempers are not always the best solution. A fruitful cooperation is more likely to occur during the interaction of opposite personalities, as in this case, when most often, one has something the other do not have, hence the mutual interest and more efficient collaboration.

The second important factor is motivation.

Conscious education demands donations. And your will is only reliable when you do something consciously. In other words, you know what you are doing or why you are doing this. Here we have a positive correlation — the stronger your motivation, the easier and more efficient the process. Besides, in my opinion, a distant future motivation is entirely useless with younger students. Maybe it is the case due to the particular time perception in children. We convince kids that time moves very slowly and just cannot foresee any distant future.

The motivation has to be internal, so the threat of punishment is not sufficient in this scenario. I think it can stimulate the short memory but is unable to ensure an efficient and prolonged memorization.

In fact, to find the right motivation is the most challenging and important teacher’s agenda. For me, the best motivation to learn is the necessity to teach the learned right away. When you learn something, you are about to transfer right away, one start to structure the information as soon as you receive it. Then, while teaching the material, I may see it in the different light and must deal with its new aspects. Also, when students know that you are still processing the data you are teaching them right this moment in the class, they see you as their colleague, a partner rather than as their educator, which leads to higher self-esteem, positively affecting interaction. At such conditions, education is much more attractive and uses a process for the both sides. In my opinion, the less this process is formalized, the more efficient it is.

Of course, all written above is not something never heard before. However, when you have it as your own, personal experience, the facts have a new meaning and are particularly convincing.
