What do you know about female pilots? Have you ever thought about the role of women in aviation? Would you dare to cross the Atlantic Ocean on your own plane relying on your own skills and professionalism? Amelia Earhart is a well-known name in aviation. Moreover, this name is associated with literature and journalism. No wonder, she became one of the most influential icons of the early wave of feminism. I have decided to write a few words about this outstanding woman who can be called a symbol of courage and adventurous spirit.
In my opinion, when one wants to describe the life and activity of an outstanding personality, he should say something about her childhood. The earliest years of our life influence our character, preferences and interests. Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas, the USA in 1897. I should say that the girl was very lucky to gain the freedom of choice of her interests, friends and entertainment.
Obviously, it was hard to think about such freedom in the second half of the 19th century. Amelia was an excellent rider, swimmer and tennis player. Moreover, she possessed a rifle and was a skillful shooter. I believe, such interests and hobbies were uncommon for an average girl. No wonder, she trained her character and developed various skills, which helped her become stronger and enduring. On the other hand, it is not right to think that she was a just boy in a skirt who was the leader of her friends who spent time in the street. The girl was fond of literature and she received perfect marks at school. It is interesting that she could read at the age of four. At that time, it was a rear phenomenon.
Amelia Earhart became interested in aviation occasionally. When she saw numerous soldiers who were the victims of World War I, she decided to devote her life to medicine. Her hospital was not far from the airfield and she could observe the flight of various planes. Very soon, she made her first flight as a passenger and it changed her entire life. She understood that she wanted to devote her life to aviation. It does not worth mentioning that she had to pay a lot if she wanted to become a good pilot.
Of course, it was not an obstacle for her. In 1922 Amelia Earhart managed to set her first record. She was the first female pilot who managed to conquer the height of 14000 feet. Her career developed very rapidly, because at that time people were extremely interested in aviation. There were many performances and shows, which attracted the audience. Amelia was a part of these shows and many people loved her, because she ruined the stereotype of a ‘weak’ and ‘dependable’ woman. She proved that women could be the best pilots who set numerous records, which contributed to the development of aviation.
The first flight across the Atlantic Ocean occurred in 1927. Very soon, Amelia Earhart was chosen as the female pilot who will repeat this action. She managed to fulfil this task in 1928. It does not worth mentioning that her name appeared in all newspapers. Earhart was honored with the US Distinguished Flying Cross for her courage and professionalism. She used her popularity to promote the ideas of feminism. She struggled for the equality of genders and wrote many books, which promoted her ideas. In addition, she was a member of the National Woman’s Party and The Ninety-Nines. This organization unites female pilots and helps them find their place in aviation.
Amelia Earhart died tragically. When she tried to make a circumnavigational flight, her plane disappeared in the Pacific Ocean. To my mind, the entire life of this woman is a big adventure. She enjoyed adventures as a child and spent her last minutes of life travelling around the world.
