Advantages and Disadvantages of Recycling Essay

What do you think about recycling? Why do people recycle wastes? Does recycling help people save energy and resources? Many people do not know the meaning of recycling. The definition is very simple. It is the use of wastes for the production of new products. This topic is very important for the analysis, because the amount of wastes is increasing constantly. Moreover, the natural resources are practically exhausted. Therefore, we should use the alternative sources of energy and recycle old and waste products for the production of the new ones. Although recycling is supposed to be a revolutionary and effective solution, it still has its disadvantages. I will focus on the strong and weak sides of this process.

Let us pay attention to the advantages of recycling at first. In my opinion, there are many pluses of recycling. To begin with, recycling helps people protect the natural environment. Obviously, when you can use old wood and useless paper, you do not have to cut down forests to obtain new wood. You do not have to devastate vast areas for the production of natural gas and oil. You do not need to ruin earth and rocks for the creation of new mines when you can use recycled metal and plastic.

Secondly, recycle reduces the consumption of energy. When you can recycle old paper, wood, metal, plastic and glass, you do not need to waste the additional energy on the processing of raw materials. You do not need to produce additional oil, iron, gas or coal when you can use wastes. In addition, recycling reduces pollution. The production of raw materials pollutes water, soil and air. Recycle reduces littering. When people realize that they can recycle bottles, old furniture, broken mirrors and devices, they will not throw them away randomly. They will sort this rubbish and litter. Obviously, this action reduces the amount of litter in the street. A glass and plastic bottle will not be considered the kind of trash. It will be most useful material for the production of a new item.

Next, recycling reduces global warming. When you do not waste additional energy on the production of new items, the natural environment does not receive unnecessary heat from your factory or plant. As a result, you do not overload the atmosphere with smoke, CO2 and other gases, which heat the air and increase the average temperature on Earth.

Finally, recycling reduces the amount of wastes, which go to landfills. Everybody knows that the absolute number of wastes consists of plastic, metal and glass items. When you do not throw them away, but make new products from them, the landfills are not overloaded with wastes.

Now I will say a few words about the disadvantages of recycling. Firstly, this process is quite expensive and very often it is cheaper to produce a new item made from new materials than to recycle wastes for this purpose. Secondly, many recycled products are of worse quality than the new ones. Consequently, the item made from wastes will not serve long. Then, many waste materials require much energy for recycling. You will waste more energy to process wastes than to process raw materials. As a result, recycling is often expensive and energy consuming. Finally, recycling is not popular in the world. The amount of recycled materials is so low that it does not improve the ecological and economic situation for the better. Recycling is practiced only in the most developed counties. As you know, their percent is very low.

To sum it all up, recycling is a good attempt to improve the ecological situation on our planet. The goal of this process is very noble and encouraging. It helps reduce littering, deforestation, pollution, global warming and it definitely saves natural resources. On the other hand, recycling has many minuses, which are mainly based on the cost of this process.
